Pikes Peak

Pikes Peak

Pikes Peak (known locally as America's Mountain) is an ultra-prominent fourteener located in the Front Range of the American Rocky Mountains and inside of Pikes National Forest, Colorado. The base sits at the town of Manitou Springs and is about 10 miles (16 km) west of downtown Colorado Springs, Colorado, in El Paso County, United States. The summit at 14,115 feet (4,302m) above sea level is higher than any point in the United States east of its longitude. The view at the summit of Pikes Peak is commonly believed to have inspired the songwriter and poet Katharine Lee Bates to write “America the Beautiful” in 1893. The mountain is named after Zebulon Pike, who never made it to the summit due to weather conditions. The first documented hike was by geologist and botanist Edwin James during his expedition on July 15, 1820.
